First Active Gay Footballer Quits at 29 to Focus on Son
Jakub Jankto Announces Retirement at 29
Jakub Jankto, the trailblazing footballer who became the first active international player to publicly reveal his homosexuality, has announced his retirement from professional soccer at the age of 29. Jankto made his statement through social media in February 2023, expressing his desire to no longer conceal his true self.
At the time of his coming out, Jankto was still part of the Czech national team, having earned 45 caps and scored four goals for his country. His club career included stints at Udinese in Italy, where he debuted, and loan periods with Ascoli and Sampdoria, eventually transferring permanently to Sampdoria in 2019. He later moved to Spain’s Getafe and had a loan spell with Sparta Prague during the 2022-23 season, where he was part of the team crowned Czech champions.
Jankto revealed that ongoing ankle injuries, which he struggled with throughout the season, contributed to his decision to retire. Additionally, he wanted to spend more time with his son, whom he shares with his former partner. He explained that the injury and a desire to be closer to his child in Prague influenced his choice to step back from professional football.
In his social media posts, Jankto shared that he had been trying to overcome a serious ligament injury in his ankle, which kept him sidelined. Despite the physical challenges, his priority was to be near his son following their separation in 2021. He expressed gratitude for the support he received and emphasized his happiness about living authentically and openly, which he considered a significant step for himself and others in football.
Beyond playing, Jankto now serves as an assistant coach for the Under-7s team at Dukla Prague. Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned how coming out has positively impacted his life and how he hopes to inspire others. His courage remains an inspiring example in the football community, one of the few male players to have come out while still active in the sport.
Jankto’s openness and bravery continue to resonate, highlighting the importance of authenticity both on and off the field.
