Sydney Sweeney Avoids American Eagle Ad Questions in First Post-Controversy Interview
Sydney Sweeney Chooses Not to Address Controversial American Eagle Campaign
In her first interview since the controversy, actress Sydney Sweeney remained silent when questioned about her American Eagle ad, which sparked widespread backlash.
During a discussion with the Wall Street Journal, the 27-year-old star declined to comment on the campaign. She also chose not to address concerns raised about the ad’s messaging, which some critics linked to offensive themes.
The advertisement in question discussed how inherited genes influence traits like hair and eye color, ending with Sweeney declaring, “My jeans are blue.” The campaign drew criticism for allegedly promoting eugenics and Nazi propaganda through wordplay on “genes” and “jeans.” Various celebrities, including Doja Cat and Lizzo, mocked the ad, prompting American Eagle to issue a statement emphasizing confidence and inclusivity in fashion.
Additionally, President Donald Trump publicly praised the ad, calling it “fantastic.” Meanwhile, public records revealed that Sweeney registered as a Republican in Monroe County, Florida, since June 2024.
Sweeney also sidestepped questions about her relationship with co-star Glen Powell, following their flirtatious press tour last year. She described their interactions as focused on activities, leaving narratives about their closeness to fan speculation.
Despite the controversy, Sweeney attended private events, including a wedding in Texas and Jeff Bezos’s star-studded ceremony in Venice, Italy, though she refrained from discussing these appearances publicly.
Addressing other topics, she acknowledged the online reactions to her selling bathwater, noting that much of the commentary came from women who admired the idea, referencing her co-star Jacob Elordi’s viral bath scene in “Saltburn.”
