6 Injured as Car Crashes into Pittsburgh Festival After Driver Defaults on Parking Brake

Car Accident at Pittsburgh Festival Injures Six

An unattended vehicle caused chaos at a festival in East Liberty, Pittsburgh, when it accidentally rolled into a crowd, injuring six people, three of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a red Kia Soul slowly moved into the parking lot of the East Liberty Black Arts Soul Steppin’, Boots-on-the-Ground Wellness Festival, and Parade.

The driver, believing he had already put the car in park, exited the vehicle, which then started to roll forward. The car struck attendees, including five women and one man, in the crowded area. The vehicle came to a stop after hitting tables and overturning vendor booths, with debris scattered across the ground.

One of the event’s photographers, Ricco J.L. Martello, recounted witnessing the chaotic scene. “I put the camera up to take a photo, then suddenly I saw the car coming in lanes. I dropped the camera, and it was already too late. The impact was already happening,” he said. Martello captured images of the car idling inside a tent amidst overturned tables and scattered items.

Martello also described the driver’s reaction, saying, “He ran from the sidewalk to try to stop the car, and he seemed really upset about what happened.” The driver cooperated with authorities at the scene.

Rescue crews transported five injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Two were considered stable, while three were in serious but stable condition. One victim received treatment at the scene.

Festival organizers, Anita and Eddie Drummond, mentioned that their family members were among those hurt but emphasized that they continued with the event. Eddie described the incident as “a freak accident,” suggesting that gear issues might have caused the car to roll unintendedly. Authorities classified the incident as “purely accidental,” and no charges are expected.
