Maine Oyster Farmer Challenges Susan Collins for Senate Control
Oyster Farmer Launches Bid for Maine Senate Seat
Graham Platner, a 40-year-old oyster farmer from Sullivan, Maine, has announced his intention to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. A veteran of the Marine and Army, Platner served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is running as a Democrat with a focus on economic populism, emphasizing a platform to reclaim wealth for the working class that has historically built and fueled the economy.
Platner believes the Democratic Party has distanced itself from working Americans, which he feels has contributed to their declining support for the party. If successful in the primary, he will face a tough general election against Collins, who is one of the few Republican Senators to have occasionally crossed party lines. Despite her opposition to certain Trump-backed legislation, her approval ratings have been slipping amid a state that narrowly voted for Trump in 2024, giving Democrats a strategic opportunity to flip the seat.
He advocates for policies that support ordinary workers, emphasizing that increased wealth disparity affects nearly everyone. “When I talk about the American working class, I mean those who work hard, face struggles, and can’t access the country’s wealth,” he explains. His background is modest—he runs the Waukeag Neck Oyster Company near his hometown and has little experience in politics, having mostly worked in hospitality and personal ventures.
Platner highlights the hardships faced by many Americans, especially after the Trump era, where political narratives often blamed minorities and immigrants rather than the real drivers of economic inequality—the wealthy and powerful corporations. He argues that addressing working Americans’ struggles doesn’t mean abandoning marginalized groups but requires acknowledging the breadth of suffering across the working class.
He asserts that the Democratic Party must reconnect with and serve the needs of the working class to regain support and enact meaningful change.
