Heroic 11-Year-Old Saves Toddler from Hidden Well

Young Girl Rescues Toddler from Well in Massachusetts

An 11-year-old girl demonstrated remarkable bravery when she rescued her 5-year-old neighbor who had fallen into an unmarked, 20-foot-deep water well in their neighborhood.

Juliana Fischer was at home when she heard her neighbor, Kathleen Freeman, screaming for help as her son, Jack Buss, had slipped through a broken cover and fallen into the well. Without hesitation, Juliana hurried outside following the distressed shouts while her mother called emergency services.

Jack was at the bottom of the well, surrounded by broken concrete and clutching a nearby pole, all the while calling for his mother. Freeman, watching helplessly from above, attempted to comfort her son until help arrived. Jack later recounted that he was searching for his “mama” during the ordeal.

Ladder leaning against the well
Juliana used a nearby ladder to help Jack climb out of the well.

Quickly assessing the situation, Juliana and her father lowered a ladder into the well so Jack could climb out. The young boy emerged largely uninjured, receiving only minor scratches. Freeman expressed her gratitude, describing Jack as very brave and noting the relief when he finally reached safety.

Cover of the well secured with bricks
Rescue crews covered the well with a heavy plate and bricks to prevent another accident.

Emergency responders secured the well with a large metal cover weighed down by bricks, promising to find a more permanent fix. Jack was transported to a hospital for thorough evaluation, ensuring his safety after the fall.

Juliana downplayed the heroic act, stating, “Anyone would have done the same thing.” Despite her modesty, her family and the community are recognizing her as a neighborhood hero for her quick thinking and courage.
