Brighton Fan Passes Away After Falling Ill During Premier League Match

A 72-year-old Brighton supporter died after collapsing during the second half of a Premier League game against Fulham at the Amex Stadium. The man was situated in the upper tier of the East Stand when he became unwell, prompting immediate medical response.

On-site medics performed extended CPR and used a defibrillator in an effort to save him, but despite these efforts by emergency services and club staff, he was pronounced dead after the match concluded. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Brighton’s Matt O’Riley scoring from a penalty in the 55th minute, and Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz leveling in stoppage time of the second half.

The club’s safety team maintained privacy screens and initially considered stopping the match; however, they decided against halting play since most supporters and the players were unaware of the situation at the time. The decision was made to allow ongoing resuscitation efforts on-site, which the medical team believed offered the best chance for survival without transporting the individual to hospital.

Brighton’s chief executive, Paul Barber, expressed condolences and acknowledged the distress caused to those nearby. Medical professionals involved praised the swift and professional emergency response, which was crucial in managing the incident.

This tragic event underscores the importance of readiness and rapid intervention during sports events. Support services such as the Samaritans and Young Minds are available for those affected by such distressing incidents.
