Wayne Rooney’s Son Kai, 15, Joins Man United U-18 Squad in a Three-Group Jump

Wayne Rooney’s 15-Year-Old Son Kai Makes Matchday Squad for Manchester United U-18s

Kai Rooney, the son of former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, has been called up to the club’s Under-18 squad for the upcoming season opener. He is included as a substitute for United’s match against Everton, which will be played away from home.

At just 15 years old, Kai has been selected in the squad by Darren Fletcher, a former teammate of Wayne Rooney and now the team’s under-18 coach. He made his debut in the second half of the game, showcasing his potential. Capable of playing both as a striker and on the wing, Kai impressed during a recent tournament in Northern Ireland, where United competed in the Super Cup NI. His performances earned him a spot in the Under-19 squad for the prestigious Mladen Ramljak Tournament in Croatia.

Kai, born in November 2009, has been part of Manchester United’s academy since 2020. His father has spoken about him, emphasizing his love for playing without pressure. Wayne Rooney highlighted that Kai handles the expectations of his famous surname well and simply enjoys the game.

The young talent has already gained recognition for his performances at youth level, notably reaching the final of the Super Cup NI. During these matches, Wayne and his wife Coleen supported Kai, alongside their other children, Kit and Cass. The Rooney family also enjoyed a fun day at Curry’s Fun Park in Portrush, mingling with fans and staff.

In addition to his father’s influence, other family connections to football include Jacey Carrick, son of ex-Red Devils midfielder Michael Carrick, who also played in the same tournament for United.

Previously working as a youth coach and technical director at Manchester United, Darren Fletcher now serves as the club’s Under-18s coach. Fletcher expressed excitement about his new role, aiming to develop young players and prepare them for professional careers, with Kai hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps and eventually break into the United first team.
