Brooklyn Dems’ Support for Mamdani Foreshadows Council Speaker & Patronage Power Play
Political Show of Unity Masks Divisions in Brooklyn
This week’s Brooklyn event on Zohran Mamdani’s “Five Boroughs Against Trump” tour was less a display of Democratic Party solidarity and more an alliance of convenience. Notably, key Democratic leaders from Kings County were absent, highlighting ongoing divisions within local politics.
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams commented that the current political landscape is fragmented, emphasizing that many figures seem to be pulling in different directions, with little agreement among them.
While Mamdani celebrated a primary victory, establishment politicians such as Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermalyne aimed to protect their interests. She initially backed ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo during the primary, but swiftly shifted her support to Mamdani for the general election, perhaps aiming to secure a powerful position like the City Council speaker role next year as a reward for her quick endorsement.
However, not all senior Democrats played along. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer chose not to attend the so-called “unity” rally, underscoring their distancing from Mamdani’s campaign and the factional nature of Brooklyn politics.
Overall, the so-called show of unity appears motivated more by factional interests than genuine shared goals for the city’s welfare. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders genuinely invested in New York’s future remain notably silent amid this political spectacle.
