Referee David Coote Sacked After Klopp Comments and Powder Scandal
Referees Chief Dismisses David Coote’s Chances of Returning to Officiating
Disgraced referee David Coote is unlikely to officiate in England again, according to referees boss Howard Webb. The 43-year-old was dismissed last year following the release of leaked videos showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and the city.
Webb stated that it would be “very difficult” for Coote to make a comeback. Despite maintaining personal contact with him, Webb emphasized the challenge Coote faces to re-enter the sport, especially after being banned by UEFA until next summer for another incident involving a video of him snorting white powder during the European Championship.
Coote has publicly apologized, admitting he was in a dark place at the time the videos were filmed. He also revealed that he had concealed his sexuality during his career due to fears of abuse.
David Coote was dismissed over leaked videos. Support for referees has increased in response to these events.
Coote previously stated he was in an “incredibly dark place” after the footage became public.
Webb highlighted that the incident prompted increased support for referees, including mental health resources. He emphasized the importance of encouraging officials to seek help without fear of repercussions, viewing such openness as a strength rather than a weakness.
He also reflected on the lessons learned, noting the need for continued human-level conversations with officials to support their well-being amidst the intense pressures of the profession.
