Michigan Autoworker’s Wallet Found Under Car Hood in Minnesota After Over a Decade

Wallet Discovered After Over a Decade Hidden in a Car

An elderly Michigan man’s missing wallet was found unexpectedly more than ten years after it went missing, hidden beneath the hood of a car in Minnesota. The wallet, a leather tri-fold filled with personal identification, gift cards, cash, and lottery tickets, re-emerged during routine vehicle repairs.

The discovery was made in June by mechanic Chad Volk at a shop in Lake Crystal, Minnesota. It was found lodged between the transmission and air filter of a 2015 Ford Edge with over 150,000 miles. Volk shared a photo of the wallet, along with the driver’s license, which featured a younger image of the owner, Richard Guilford.

Guilford, now 56 and residing in Petersburg, Michigan, retired from Ford in 2024 after nearly 35 years. He recounted that in 2014, while working at a Ford assembly plant, he realized his wallet was missing. Despite searching multiple vehicles, he couldn’t locate it, and eventually, he accepted its loss. The wallet was a gift from his sons, making its disappearance particularly upsetting.

Remarkably, the wallet was remarkably well-preserved, despite. being exposed to the elements, including rain and snow over the years. Guilford expressed amazement that the contents, including some gift cards, were still intact. Notably, a $250 gift card from an outdoor retailer remained valid — the company has since offered him additional credit to celebrate the find.

Guilford plans to keep the wallet as a keepsake, placing it in a china cabinet for his children and future generations to remember. “It’s a story I’ll tell my great-grandkids,” he said, emphasizing how much he enjoys sharing stories about his life experiences.
