Dems Seek Victory: Democratic Socialists of America Aim High
Democratic Socialists of America Focus on Expanding Support and Political Influence
Last month, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) gathered in Chicago amid growing membership and recent electoral successes, including Zohran Mamdani’s primary win for New York City mayor. While debates around electoralism versus radical activism persisted, the overarching aim remained: to achieve electoral victories and advance their agenda.
The convention marked a shift towards building broader support, with the first-time inclusion of 40 external guests from labor unions, community groups, and international parties. Organizer Laura Waldin emphasized the importance of connecting with everyday people who believe in a better future.
Keynote speaker Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib urged the delegates to diversify their leadership and to engage in street organizing and face-to-face outreach. She emphasized that cultivating “people power” is essential to fighting fascism.
Delegates voted to field a presidential candidate in 2028, aiming to prioritize working-class struggles at the national level. Jeremy Cohan, a former co-chair of NYC DSA, highlighted the importance of participating in the 2024 primaries, criticizing the decision to sit out to confront President Biden directly.
Despite internal challenges, local chapters have grown rapidly, with around 250 members holding elected office nationwide. Notable victories include Portland’s city council and a primary win in Detroit, where volunteers knocked on 15,000 doors.
Active Membership and Community Engagement
Electoral successes are complemented by militant activism. Members like Jessica Czarnecki, who joined after her coworkers went on strike, value DSA’s tangible support. Her experience exemplifies the organization’s community-building efforts, such as organizing tenants’ rights meetings and mutual aid projects.
Other members, like electrician Dominic Bruno, engage through social events and mutual aid projects, fostering a sense of solidarity beyond electoral politics. Recent victories in Minneapolis and New York, alongside active grassroots organizing, demonstrate DSA’s expanding influence.
Overall, the convention showcased DSA’s strategic efforts to grow its base, amplify community activism, and push for political breakthroughs at multiple levels of government.
