Harry Maguire Reveals Key Changes After Manchester United’s Tough Season

Harry Maguire Discusses Manchester United’s Challenges and Future Plans

Harry Maguire has opened up about the difficulties faced during Ruben Amorim’s unstable first season as Manchester United’s manager and shared insights into the Portuguese coach’s approach to rebuilding the team for the upcoming season.

Amorim was appointed last winter following the departure of Erik ten Hag, in an effort to salvage a turbulent campaign. However, his initial stint was hampered by a squad lacking cohesion and experience with the 3-4-3 system, resulting in inconsistent performances. During that period, Maguire also revealed that star forward Marcus Rashford sought a loan move in January, amidst internal challenges, including tensions with young talent Alejandro Garnacho.

The team concluded last season in 16th place, missing out on European competitions after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final. Nevertheless, with a full pre-season and new signings such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, Maguire believes there is renewed optimism and a fresh start.

Maguire highlighted that the recent positive atmosphere within the squad has fostered honest self-assessment and acknowledgment of areas needing improvement. He expressed confidence that the team’s full training preparation and new additions will enhance performance.

“It’s a fresh start, and we aim to be competing at the top,” Maguire stated. He emphasized that the squad is now more physically prepared, sharper, and competitive, with a better understanding of the demanding style under Amorim’s management.

Maguire also noted the team’s adaptation to a back-three formation and the emphasis on aggressive, front-foot play. He acknowledged last season’s struggles with fitness and decision-making in possession and stressed the importance of improving build-up play, especially in their defensive third.

Maguire highlighted that the team often shifted between formations during matches, playing a back four, back three, or back five depending on game situations. As he approaches the final year of his contract, the defender is eager to showcase the revamped United lineup when they face Arsenal at Old Trafford in the season opener next week.
