The Trump administration has faced a series of setbacks lately, prompting the need for a distraction. With ongoing controversies such as the delayed release of the Epstein files and economic challenges, officials resorted to familiar tactics: criticizing major cities with claims of falsehoods and inflating federal policing efforts.

Despite the event’s focus on crime, Trump deviated into attacks on political figures, including the mayors of Chicago and Los Angeles, the governors of Illinois and California, former President Biden, and allegations about election irregularities in 2020. Remarkably, the national media broadcasted these outbursts live with little apparent reaction, treating the spectacle as ordinary.

This normalization is problematic. Many Americans must urgently reject attempts to distort reality. The media should cease downplaying these incidents or selectively quoting Trump to make his behavior appear normal. Instead, we must recognize the ongoing effort to gaslight the public and challenge it.
