Crystal Palace Miss Out on Europa League; Join Conference League Instead
Crystal Palace Loses European Appeal and Will Play in the Conference League, With Nottingham Forest Taking Their Place in the Europa League
Crystal Palace has been unsuccessful in their attempt to overturn UEFA’s decision and will participate in the Conference League this season. The club was relegated from the Europa League earlier this summer due to a breach of UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.
The club’s officials appealed the ruling in a lengthy session at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne but received a verdict against them. CAS confirmed that UEFA’s decision to exclude Palace from the Europa League was justified, and Palace will now compete in the Conference League, a move that could cost them up to £20 million in revenue. Nottingham Forest will replace Palace in the Europa League following the ruling.
Palace had argued that their owner, John Textor, who held a 43% stake in the club and was involved with Lyon, did not have sufficient influence over club decisions. They claimed that voting power was mostly held by chairman Steve Parish and other partners, and thus Textor’s influence was limited. The club also contended that UEFA’s policies were inconsistently applied, citing differences in deadlines and communication.
The decision was based on evidence that Textor owned stakes in both Palace and Lyon and was a board member with significant influence over both clubs during UEFA’s assessment. The ruling aligns with recent CAS decisions, such as the removal of Drogheda United from Europe for similar ownership rule violations.
