Endangered Sea Turtle Released into Atlantic from NYC Beach
Endangered Turtle Returns to the Atlantic After Rehabilitation
A young, endangered sea turtle was successfully released back into the Atlantic Ocean after months of care following a cold-stunning incident last winter.
Named Elton, the juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was found stranded on a beach in Barnstable, Massachusetts, in December, suffering from hypothermia caused by failing to migrate south in time for colder temperatures.
After extensive rehabilitation at the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Elton was released near Brooklyn, New York, where he quickly swam away into the open waters.
Estimated to be between 2 and 5 years old, Elton’s journey highlights the importance of conservation efforts. His release was met with cheers from onlookers, as footage showed the turtle swimming away confidently, with many supporters chanting his name.
“Elton’s return is an inspiring example of what science, compassionate care, and public involvement can achieve,” said a spokesperson from the New York Aquarium. “This turtle’s journey from vulnerability to freedom embodies our mission to protect and recover these remarkable creatures.”
Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, known as the smallest in the world, weigh between 70 and 100 pounds and are named after Richard M. Kemp, a Florida fisherman who first identified the species in 1906.
