St. James-Smithtown Falls Short in Heartbreaking LLWS Loss
Heartbreaking End for Little League Team in Regional Championship
The St. James-Smithtown Little League’s historic season concluded with a tough 12-1 loss in the regional final, just one victory shy of qualifying for the Little League World Series.
Facing Connecticut’s Fairfield National, the Long Island team was overpowered in a game that ended after four innings. Starting pitcher Luca Pellegrini delivered an impressive performance, allowing only one hit with nine strikeouts, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the defeat.
“It’s hard not to feel disappointed, but the journey was incredible,” said team manager Scott Santelli, visibly emotional after the game. His tears reflected pride in his players and sadness that their season was over, as he reflected on the growth and camaraderie shared over the summer.
The game saw efforts from pitchers Kevin Moran, who allowed six runs over three innings, and Ryan Delgado in relief, but the opposing team’s strong offense proved too much. The Bulls struggled offensively early on, managing only a single hit by catcher JT Borowski in the third inning, despite loading the bases later in the game.
Despite the defeat, the season was historic. The team became the first from their league in New York to win the regional championship, and player Jeremy Katz earned the title of Empire State home run derby champion. The players celebrated their summer of achievement, making lifelong friends and bonding during their time at the Little League’s Bristol complex.
Fans from their local communities gathered in support, filling local bars to cheer on their team throughout the run, demonstrating the pride and excitement their journey inspired.
Manager Santelli expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing that this is just the beginning. “We’ll continue supporting these kids as they grow and play,” he said. “This has been the greatest week of my life, and I’ll be following their careers closely.”
