Man City Star Injured: Out for Two Months, Guardiola Faces Season Kickoff Challenge
Manchester City Faces Setback as Key Player’s Injury Could Sideline Him for Two More Months
Manchester City have encountered a significant obstacle following the revelation that Mateo Kovacic’s recovery period may extend up to four months. After undergoing Achilles surgery shortly after last season, Kovacic missed the Club World Cup in the United States to focus on healing.
The Croatian midfielder, who had joined City in Sicily for a final summer friendly against Palermo, is now expected to be out until October. Despite City’s deep midfield talent—ten players capable of central roles—manager Pep Guardiola has expressed a desire to rely on only three for the deeper positions. These include Kovacic, who is currently injured, Rodri returning after nine months, and Nico Gonzalez.
Guardiola explained, “We have three. Kova, who is injured until September or October, Rodri coming back, and Nico Gonzalez. Others can play there but are more attack-minded.”
In addition, Kovacic had played through pain in recent matches, contributing to City’s quest for a Champions League spot last season. There was also speculation about interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League regarding his future.
Though the squad boasts a variety of midfield options, Guardiola emphasized the importance of maintaining a small, specialized core for deeper roles, especially given the demanding upcoming schedule. He noted, “After September, we face matches every three or four days for almost a year. We will need all our players.”

With Kovacic sidelined, City will need to adapt quickly as they prepare for the new season, relying on a limited group of midfielders to fill crucial roles in the team’s tactical setup.
