12-Year-Old Pennsylvania Boy Charged After Scalding Brother in Social Media Prank

Boy Severely Burned in Hot Water Challenge

A nine-year-old boy in Pennsylvania sustained serious burns after his older brother poured scalding hot water on him during a dangerous social media trend, authorities reported. The 12-year-old was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault for boiling water in a microwave and drenching his sleeping sibling on July 29.

The incident was part of the so-called “Hot Water Challenge,” a harmful prank where participants drink or dump boiling water on themselves or others. The young boy suffered severe burns to his neck and chest and was immediately transported to the Lehigh Burn Center in Allentown for treatment.

The juvenile was also charged with recklessly endangering another person. Authorities are continuing their investigation and have urged parents to oversee their children’s online activities more closely.

This incident is not isolated. The “Hot Water Challenge” has made headlines before, with victims suffering permanent scars. In 2018, a 15-year-old from Indianapolis received second-degree burns after a friend pulled the prank while he was sleeping. Another tragic case involved an 8-year-old girl in Florida who died in 2017 after drinking boiling water through a straw, dared by her cousin.
