Trump Admin Blocks Biden’s Wind Farm in Idaho
President Trump Reverses Approval of Lava Ridge Wind Project in Idaho
The Biden-era approval for the Lava Ridge Wind Project in Idaho has been overturned by the Trump administration, citing concerns over environmental and cultural impacts. Originally signed off by the Bureau of Land Management in December, the project was to feature 241 turbines—down from an initial plan of 400—and was designed to produce enough electricity for up to 500,000 homes.
The project faced opposition from local residents who criticized the turbines’ towering height—over 660 feet—and its potential to spoil views near the historic Minidoka site, where Japanese Americans were detained during World War II. The closest turbine to Minidoka would have been 9 miles away, but preservation advocates remain wary.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that by revoking the approval, federal lands and rural communities are better protected from what he calls an irresponsible project. The administration’s move aligns with its broader stance against wind and solar development, viewing these renewable sources as unreliable and costly. The recent legislation has phased out tax credits for clean energy, and new directives have increased scrutiny on future projects.
Environmental advocates and preservationists, including Robyn Achilles of Friends of Minidoka, are reviewing the decision and emphasizing the need to preserve the cultural significance of historic sites from development. Meanwhile, opponents argue that wind energy is among the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly power sources, with declining costs making it a competitive alternative to fossil fuels.
Recent actions by Burgum include limiting offshore wind development and requiring new wind and solar projects on federal lands to consider “capacity density,” emphasizing the projects’ land and water use. Industry leaders have criticized these restrictions as harmful obstacles to renewable expansion, which underpins the nation’s efforts to transition away from fossil fuels.
