US Journalist Alec Luhn Missing in Norway After Backpacking Trip

Missing American Journalist Reported on Norwegian Glacier

An extensive search is underway for an American journalist who disappeared while hiking alone on a glacier in Folgefonna National Park, Norway. His family reported him missing after he failed to return or catch his flight home on July 31.

Alec Luhn, 38, a renowned climate journalist, was last seen in Odda, southwestern Norway. He had shared his location during the hike, and his family initially believed he was in an area with limited cell service. However, when he did not board his scheduled flight, they alerted authorities.

His wife, Veronika Silchenko, an Emmy-winning journalist, posted on social media seeking information and confirmed that he was last in contact on Thursday, sharing a photo from his final known location. Luhn, originally from Wisconsin and now residing in London, is known for his reporting on climate issues for outlets such as The Guardian, The New York Times, and National Geographic.

Authorities launched a search operation, which included helicopters, but bad weather forced them to suspend the efforts on Monday night. Despite the weather challenges, rescue teams, including local volunteers, sniffer dogs, and drones, resumed searches on Tuesday but faced further suspension due to adverse conditions.

Family and friends are concerned, especially given Luhn’s experience and passion for Arctic exploration, glaciers, and climate change stories. Search teams continue to look for him in the challenging terrain near the glacier, hoping for his safe discovery.
