Liverpool’s £250m Transfer Window Criticized by Carragher—Why He’s Opposed to Isak Move

Liverpool’s ‘messy’ £250m Transfer Window Draws Criticism from Jamie Carragher, Who Opposes Alexander Isak Deal

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed skepticism about the club’s recent transfer strategy, particularly regarding their purported interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. Carragher suggests the club’s spending, which exceeds £250 million this summer, appears uncoordinated rather than well-planned.

Liverpool has already secured Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million. Although these signings indicate a significant investment, Carragher questions the club’s approach, especially given their interest in Isak, whom Newcastle allegedly values at around £150 million.

Recent reports indicate that Liverpool’s initial bid of £110 million for Isak was rejected, and Newcastle has signaled that a deal may require an even higher price. Isak, who recently returned to Newcastle’s training ground after attempting to force a move, is considered one of Liverpool’s top targets. However, Carragher doesn’t believe paying such a hefty fee is prudent business.

During a discussion on The Overlap, Carragher criticized the perceived lack of a clear plan: “Liverpool’s summer spending doesn’t seem aligned with their usual approach, or even with what supporters expect. Spending £150 million on Isak, who’s a backup for another signing, doesn’t feel right.” He added that the situation appears chaotic, especially with Isak seemingly upset after Arsenal signed a striker and Liverpool also made a move.

He further noted that the club’s transfer activities seem disorganized: “It looks like they’re buying two high-profile forwards without a coherent strategy—they might need to shift Ekitike to the left to accommodate Isak, which complicates squad balance.” Carragher emphasized the importance of a well-thought-out plan, rather than impulsive spending, especially on a player that might not fit seamlessly into Liverpool’s tactical setup.

Meanwhile, Newcastle may need to find a new striker if they decide to part with Isak, who had been a key part of their squad before the transfer rumors intensified. Overall, Carragher’s comments reflect concerns about Liverpool’s current transfer approach and financial priorities this summer.
