Tottenham Sign Joao Palhinha on Loan After Maddison’s Injury Blow
Tottenham Confirms Loan Signing of Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich After James Maddison’s Injury
Tottenham has officially announced the signing of midfielder Joao Palhinha on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich. The deal includes an option to purchase the player permanently next summer.
The 30-year-old was expected to undergo medical checks over the weekend before completing the transfer, with Tottenham agreeing to cover his wages entirely. Palhinha’s move came shortly after Bayern placed him on their transfer list, just a year after he joined from Fulham for approximately £45 million.
Having previously impressed in the Premier League with Fulham, Palhinha made a total of 79 appearances for the club over two seasons and was awarded their Player of the Season accolade in his debut campaign. Despite attracting interest from other top-flight clubs, including Fulham, he chose to move to Tottenham.
The transfer occurred amid a difficult pre-season for Tottenham, following a serious knee injury to star midfielder James Maddison. Maddison sustained the injury during a 1-1 draw with Newcastle, after which coach Thomas Frank provided a somber update, indicating it could be a significant setback. Maddison’s injury has cast a shadow over Spurs’ preparations, with Frank reflecting on the unpredictability and brutality of football.
In addition to Palhinha, Tottenham’s transfer activity included signing playmaker Mohammed Kudus from West Ham for £55 million and making forward Mathys Tel’s loan transfer from Bayern permanent, securing a six-year contract. They also welcomed new arrivals Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split and Kota Takai from Kawasaki.
