Former Arsenal Player Thomas Partey Granted Bail Amid Court Protests Over Rape Allegations
Thomas Partey, a midfielder previously with Arsenal, has been released on conditional bail following his court appearance related to serious allegations. The 32-year-old faces five counts of rape and one of sexual assault, with charges stemming from incidents reported between 2021 and 2022.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court wearing a black zip-up jumper and carried a navy blazer. Standing in the dock with his arms behind his back, he was granted bail with conditions that prohibit contact with the three alleged victims and require him to inform authorities of any change of address or international travel. His next court date is scheduled for September 2 at the Crown Court.
The charges include two counts of rape against one woman and three against another, with an additional sexual assault allegation involving a third woman, according to prosecutors. The Metropolitan Police first received reports of rape in February 2022, and the case was reviewed thoroughly over three years before charges were filed.
Partey’s legal team maintains his innocence, with his lawyer stating, “He fully cooperated with authorities and looks forward to clearing his name.”
The allegations emerged as Partey was finalizing a transfer to Spanish club Villarreal, having left Arsenal, where he played since 2020. During his time at Arsenal, he made 35 Premier League appearances last season and scored four goals. He is also an experienced international for Ghana, with 51 caps to date.
While Arsenal officials declined to comment on the ongoing legal case, supporters protested outside the court, criticizing the club’s handling of the situation. The protest sign read: “Arsenal said: ‘We do the right thing’. Then did nothing,” highlighting their concern over the club’s response amid the allegations.
