Tragic Death of Beloved Cyclist Protecting Family at California Train Station
A well-loved cyclist was fatally stabbed by an attacker after bravely intervening during an incident at a San Francisco train station. Colden Kimber, 28, was at a Muni stop with his girlfriend when a man suddenly approached a family, threatening them loudly. Kimber, standing over 6 feet 4 inches, stepped in to defend them.
The assailant, Sean Collins, 29, shouted threatening remarks towards the mother and her children, claiming, “Oh, you think you are better than me,” and “You are scared of me,” as he confronted them at the Ingleside transit hub. Witnesses say Kimber quickly moved to shield the family and was struck from behind, plunging a six-inch blade into his neck as he looked toward an approaching train. The attack was completely unprovoked, according to authorities.
Kimber was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries after surgery. Described as studying kinesiology and working at American Cyclery—where he had been repairing bikes for three years—he was known for his positive influence and kindness. His mother, Lara Litchfield-Kimber, shared her grief through a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised over $91,000 to support her family.
Kimber, a native of Dryden, NY, was an avid cyclist who had taken up biking after participating in a triathlon in his mother’s place. Despite never having ridden on open roads before, he became passionate about cycling. His friends and colleagues remember him as a vibrant and uplifting person, whose love for biking was evident in the community’s heartfelt tributes.
Following the attack, Collins was arrested nearby and charged with murder. Surveillance footage captured the brutal incident, and authorities confirmed Collins’s connection to the scene. A memorial bike ride is scheduled for September 7 in Kimber’s honor, celebrating his life and legacy.
