Long Island Cop S:ho:t in Face During Warrant Serving in Homicide Probe
Man Barricades Himself After Killing Co-Worker and Shooting Officer
A man from Long Island was involved in a violent incident that resulted in the death of a colleague and the injury of a police officer. Authorities report that the suspect, Nieves Reyes, 48, fatally stabbed his 66-year-old co-worker, Eugene Allen, and shot a Suffolk County officer in the face before barricading himself inside his home and holding police at bay.
Reyes surrendered to police outside his North Bay Shore residence early Thursday. He now faces charges of murder in connection with Allen’s death and attempted murder for wounding the officer. The officer, a Navy veteran and father of two with two years on the force, was struck about half an inch from his eye but is expected to recover, according to medical officials.
The incident unfolded after police responded to reports of a bloodied body found in nearby bushes, close to Reyes’ home, on Wednesday. Authorities linked Reyes to the victim through security footage from Ring cameras. The previous day, officers discovered a body covered in blood in a wooded area near the suspect’s residence.
When officers arrived with a warrant on Thursday, Reyes allegedly fired multiple shots, hitting the wounded officer. He then briefly barricaded himself inside the house. Police did not specify how long the standoff lasted, but Reyes was eventually taken into custody and charged with both crimes.
Reyes and Allen were co-workers at a mechanic shop. The victim’s body was found in the bushes with a significant amount of blood, indicating a violent struggle. The officer sustained injuries that fractured his cheekbone; doctors said the bullet was lodged in his ear, narrowly missing his eye, and is expected to survive.
The motive behind the fatal attack remains unclear. Residents reported finding blood on the street the night before and some observed part of the victim’s body in nearby brush.
Reyes’s arrest concludes a chaotic and tragic series of events that shocked the local community.
