NYC’s ‘We’re With Colbert’ Rally Fails to Impress
Small Protest Supports Outgoing Late Show Host
A rally outside the CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan supporting the soon-to-be former “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert drew fewer than 20 participants on Sunday. The event, organized under the banner “We’re With Colbert,” aimed to promote what organizers called integrity amid concerns over the show’s end.
Demonstrators gathered briefly and dispersed quickly, with police on-site confirming most had left within minutes. A protester who declined to reveal his identity, only identifying himself as Matt “Slim,” stated, “Our country is not perfect, but the First Amendment remains. Now, there are attempts to silence that right.”
CBS announced that declining viewership and profits led to the decision to conclude the show in 2026, resulting in Colbert’s departure. Critics, however, suggested the move was influenced by political pressure, specifically from former President Trump.
The show’s cancellation coincided with CBS’s recent merger with Skydance Media, valued at $8.4 billion, which required federal approval. Colbert, known for his sharp commentary and frequent critiques of Trump, has been a prominent figure in late-night TV.
One supporter emphasized the importance of free speech, stating, “This is a First Amendment attack. We can’t stand for that.”
Meanwhile, Colbert has faced criticism for his apparent tendency to feature only liberal-leaning guests. A report from the conservative group MRC NewsBusters noted that since 2022, his show has hosted 176 liberals and just one Republican.
