Mariska Hargitay’s Birthday Surprise with Peter Hermann Turns Dramatic!
Actress Mariska Hargitay Shares the Story Behind Her Surprising 60th Birthday Gift
Mariska Hargitay, best known for her role on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” recently recounted a memorable and humorous story about her 60th birthday surprise orchestrated by her husband, Peter Hermann.
During a Q&A at the HamptonsFilm’s SummerDocs series, Hargitay explained how she initially feared for her safety when Hermann instructed her to get into an Uber without revealing where they were headed. The surprise took place on the first day of filming for her documentary, “My Mom Jayne,” dedicated to her late mother, actress Jayne Mansfield. Hermann told her, “There’s an Uber outside. I need you to get in the car,” despite her hesitation. He insisted, “Just do as I say,” heightening her nervousness as they shut off their location sharing.
As the car traveled along the 405 in Los Angeles, her mind raced with possibilities. Believing they might be headed to the airport, she joked, “I’m sure my husband’s gonna have me whacked,” to a laughter-filled audience. Following what seemed like an endless drive, they arrived at an unmarked warehouse, where her family and crew awaited.
The emotional highlight of the event was Hermann revealing a grand piano that belonged to her mother—a cherished family heirloom she hadn’t seen since childhood when her mother passed away in 1967. She described the gift as “magnificent,” emphasizing its significance as a tangible link to her mother and a symbol of her love for her family.
Despite her initial fears, Hargitay reflected on the moment with warmth, calling it “one of the best things in my life” and a powerful example of love and connection. She concluded, “It’s still like a dream come true,” cherishing the experience as a moment of reclaiming a precious part of her family’s legacy and creating lifelong memories.
