Jacksonville Traffic Stop Incident Sparks Calls for Justice

The mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, has publicly addressed the disturbing viral footage of a police officer punching a male driver during a traffic stop. She emphasized the importance of allowing the investigative process to unfold before drawing conclusions.

Mayor Donna Deegan acknowledged public frustration and urged patience, stating, “Let’s wait to see where the investigation leads. Hopefully, it will result in a proper resolution.”

The video, recorded in February and circulated widely last week, shows William McNeil Jr. refusing to surrender his license and documents after police pulled him over for allegedly having non-functioning headlights in bad weather. Tensions escalated when officers forcibly broke his car window and removed him, during which an officer struck him in the face. McNeil remained seated inside the vehicle, which was eventually smashed, and officers found a large serrated knife on the floorboard.

Deegan noted that she and the police sheriff, who are independently elected officials, have separate duties — she manages city government, and Sheriff TK Waters oversees law enforcement. She praised the sheriff for releasing bodycam footage and maintaining transparency, urging the community to be patient as investigations continue.

Following the incident, Waters announced he ordered both criminal and administrative reviews of the officers’ conduct, with the sheriff indicating that no law violations had been identified at this stage.

Lawyers Ben Crump and Harry Daniels announced they now represent McNeil, citing national outrage and pointing to racial factors, as McNeil is Black and the officers involved are white. They criticized the incident as an act of brutality and called for full transparency by releasing all police footage. They demand accountability and justice for McNeil.
