Americans Spend Nearly Half Their Day Online, New Poll Reveals

Americans Spend Nearly Half Their Day Online

According to a recent survey, Americans dedicate almost 50% of their day to internet usage. The time is divided equally between consuming video content and engaging in activities such as work, browsing, or shopping.

“This survey was quite revealing,” remarked Eric Bruno, senior vice president of product management at a telecommunications company. The survey involved 2,000 U.S. residents with home internet subscriptions, offering insight into daily digital habits.

Bruno emphasized the importance of reliable and affordable internet, stating, “It highlights how vital a robust online connection has become in today’s society.”

On average, individuals spend over 10 hours daily online. Of this time, approximately 5.4 hours are spent browsing, working, gaming, social media, or managing emails and bills, while the remaining five hours are dedicated to streaming videos and TV shows.

Most people—about 55%—prefer to stream shows or movies via their television, with 20% using mobile phones and 25% utilizing laptops or tablets. While many access the internet through their mobile devices or computers, 44% also stream content on their TVs.

Beyond streaming, nearly 80% browse the web or pay bills online, 73% engage with social media, 72% shop online, 37% handle work tasks, and 20% complete school assignments.

The survey was conducted online from May 6-14, among adults aged 18 and over who subscribe to home internet services.
