Zohran Mamdani’s Plan Threatens New Yorkers’ Happiness, Warns Ex-Mayor
Lessons from a Small Town: Rethinking Government and Purpose
Memphis, Michigan, a modest town of just one square mile and around 1,200 residents, offers valuable insights for larger cities like New York. Despite its size, Memphis experienced a remarkable transformation during my tenure as mayor. The community faced economic decline, with most downtown buildings vacant and a lack of vitality. By revitalizing local businesses, modernizing policies, eliminating debt, and encouraging volunteerism, we restored growth, filled vacant spaces, and fostered a renewed sense of community.
This experience underscored a critical lesson: governments should focus on creating environments where individuals can thrive through their own efforts, rather than simply providing solutions. When government presumes to “give” success or security, it risks impeding personal growth and undermining dignity. True progress arises from empowering citizens to realize their potential through effort, not from overreach or entitlement.
Modern political approaches often lean toward comfort and equality, but at the expense of human purpose. By discouraging struggle and achievement, such policies diminish the joy of overcoming challenges and the pride of success. As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “The Constitution only guarantees the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.”
More than ever, we must recognize that our innate drive for purpose and self-reliance defines our humanity. Empowering individuals to pursue their goals fosters fulfillment and resilience, whereas overbearing policies threaten to erode these vital human qualities.
While some political platforms seek to reframe the role of government, emphasizing control and redistribution—such as proposals to shift property taxes based on race or ethnicity—these strategies often disempower communities. Genuine growth stems from fostering opportunity, not from paternalistic programs that diminish personal agency.
Ultimately, a focus on empowering individuals and creating environments conducive to self-driven achievement will lead to richer, more meaningful lives and resilient communities. Small towns like Memphis show that fostering purpose, effort, and personal growth creates a foundation for lasting progress.
