Joe Pantoliano Reveals How Mental Health Battles Nearly Destroyed His Life
Joe Pantoliano Opens Up About His Long Battle with Depression
Actor Joe Pantoliano has candidly shared how severe mental health issues almost “destroyed” his personal life and marriage. Diagnosed with clinical depression in 2007, he revealed that his struggles with mental health have shaped his journey and activism.
He recounted suffering for over a decade before his diagnosis and turning to self-medication through risky behaviors, including alcohol, women, and reckless actions. “I was a mess for a long time,” Pantoliano admitted, attributing his troubled youth to a difficult childhood with a mother battling her own mental health issues.
The actor described how his mental health crises almost led to losing his family. “My wife and children were ready to throw me out,” he said. “The only people happy to see me were my dogs.” Reflecting on his dark days, he noted that his dogs were the only source of joy left.
He credits his dogs with saving his life, describing himself as “like Tinkerbell and the light was dying.” Pantoliano also expressed how his love for his pets kept him going during the darkest times.
In his efforts to raise awareness, he founded “No Kidding, Me Too!” in 2009, a foundation dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. “Our mission was to make discussions of mental illness trendy and accepted,” he said, adding, “And we’ve succeeded—people are talking about it more openly now.”
He also shared that his journey through depression inspired him to write two books about his experiences with mental health challenges. Pantoliano’s openness has helped many realize they are not alone in their struggles.
Recently, he expressed discomfort with the current political climate, contemplating a move to Portugal to escape the atmosphere in the United States. “I want to run for the hills because of what’s happening,” he explained.
