Inmate Khalil Bryan Mistakenly Released in NOLA Due to Human Error

Inmate Mistakenly Released Due to Clerical Error

An inmate with a violent criminal record was accidentally freed from the Orleans Parish Jail because of a clerical mistake. The inmate, Khalil Bryan, was released on Friday despite having multiple active charges against him. An internal investigation has been initiated by the Sheriff’s Office to determine how the error occurred.

Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged the mistake, stating, “The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office takes full responsibility for this clerical error and sincerely apologizes to the public, law enforcement partners, and the court. The mistake was human error—misidentification caused by a shared last name between two individuals.” She added that disciplinary measures would be taken and safeguards implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Bryan was being held on charges including illegal possession of stolen property, drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest. Additionally, he had an active warrant for aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic abuse, child endangerment, and home invasion. He was also wanted in nearby Jefferson Parish for a $100,000 bench warrant for failure to appear and a separate $25,000 bond for recent felony charges.

The District Attorney, Jason Williams, issued a stern statement, explaining that Bryan’s release was due to a failure by deputies to properly verify his identity when responding to a bond posted for another inmate. He described the incident as a serious lapse that jeopardizes public safety and ongoing systemic issues within detention procedures.

The authorities have issued a manhunt for Bryan, warning the public to assist in his capture.

All known victims involved have been notified, and investigators are working tirelessly, including in-person outreach, to contact anyone who might not have been informed. This incident follows a recent escape from the same facility, where ten inmates fled but nine were recaptured. Bryan remains at large, and law enforcement across jurisdictions is actively seeking him.

The District Attorney’s Office urges anyone with information about Bryan’s whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately. Both the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are continuing efforts to ensure public safety and accountability.
