Exclusive: Letitia James’ Gaza Letter Omits Hamas — Revealed by New York Post

Democratic Officials Protest Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

New York State Attorney General Letitia James circulated a petition among Democratic officials advocating for urgent action to address what they describe as a “humanitarian catastrophe” unfolding in Gaza. The initial draft of the petition emphasized the famine situation but notably did not directly condemn Hamas for the ongoing violence.

The draft, shared with multiple elected officials, stated, “We are united in this moment by a truth we can no longer ignore: a famine is unfolding in Gaza before the eyes of the world,” and was presented as representing a coalition of diverse officials. It called on Americans to support relief efforts and push diplomatic solutions to end the crisis.

Letitia James circulated the petition without initially mentioning Hamas’s role in the conflict.

After media inquiries, James’s office released a revised version of the petition condemning the October 7th attack by Hamas and urging immediate aid to Gaza. The office explained that the reference to Hamas was added well before the media request.

The petition has garnered support from over 60 Democratic officials, including prominent figures like Rep. Jerold Nadler and NYC Comptroller Brad Lander. Some critics from within the political spectrum, such as Brooklyn Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, condemned the original draft for omitting references to Hamas and its role in the conflict.

State Assemblyman Charles Fall supported the petition, emphasizing the humanitarian suffering and highlighting the need for balanced solutions that acknowledge the complexities of the crisis, including hostage situations.
