Colorado Dentist’s Lover Reveals 4,000 Texts in 18 Days During Murder Trial

Key Witnesses Discuss Affair and Allegations in Colorado Murder Trial

The romantic relationship of a woman involved with the defendant came to light during the trial of a Colorado dentist accused of intentionally poisoning his wife to cover up her murder. The defendant, Dr. James Toliver Craig, is charged with first-degree murder of his wife, Angela Craig, who died in March 2023 from lethal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline.

Dr. Karin Cain, an orthodontist from Texas, testified that she met Craig at a dental conference in Las Vegas in February 2023, shortly after her divorce was finalized. She described their interaction as emotionally honest and initially non-physical, though they shared a kiss and exchanged over 4,000 messages over 18 days. Cain believed Craig was separated and close to finalizing his divorce, unaware of his ongoing relationship with his wife or other infidelities, including alleged hiring of a prostitute.

Cain recounted that Craig professed love for her shortly after their meeting, often framing their connection as spiritual and deep. They exchanged tender messages, with some including sexting, and Craig expressed a desire to marry her. Their relationship advanced via texting even as Cain postponed a planned visit, due to her concerns over her health and Angela Craig’s illness.

Craig reportedly told Cain that Angela was suicidal and had previously attempted self-harm. In the days before Angela’s death, Craig maintained that he was at work when she was hospitalized. Cain testified that Craig sent vulnerable love letters from jail after his arrest, which she initially burned but later turned over to authorities. She described feeling conflicted, as she believed their affair was genuine, despite the suspicious circumstances.

The defense questioned Cain about her ignorance of Craig’s ongoing contact with other women and his secretive behavior, to which she admitted she was unaware. She described the relationship as exciting and “like love,” similar to that of a high school romance, but acknowledged she missed warning signs at the time.

The trial continues with evidence suggesting Craig’s manipulation, including his attempts to hide the true nature of his marriage and infidelity, as prosecutors aim to portray him as a calculated killer pursuing a new romantic life while his wife was still alive. The courtroom proceedings reveal a tangled web of deception, love, and deadly intent.
