Chris Matthews: US Moving Toward Trump Despite Polls

Ex-MSNBC Host Chris Matthews Claims Trump is Gaining Popularity Despite Polls

Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews argues that President Donald Trump is increasingly gaining support among Americans, despite recent polls indicating his approval ratings have fallen to historic lows. Matthews dismisses polls from Gallup and CNN which show Trump’s approval at 37% and 41%, respectively, suggesting these figures do not reflect the true strength of his backing.

He believes the country is moving in Trump’s direction, emphasizing his view that Trump remains a powerful public figure. Matthews stated, “His strength exceeds that of the Democratic side. He is a stronger figure than most Democratic leaders.” He also pointed out that Trump’s charisma and perceived strength resonate with a significant portion of voters, with around half of the country reportedly buying into his support.

Despite Matthews’ confidence, polls like the recent Associated Press-NORC survey show Trump’s approval ratings at about 40%, which is notably lower than those of recent presidents at the same point in their second terms. However, Trump continues to enjoy strong support within his Republican base, with recent surveys indicating approximately 88-90% of GOP supporters backing him, a figure that has slightly increased.

Trump has publicly celebrated these numbers, claiming his support within the Republican Party has surged, especially after what he described as a “hoax” related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, which he maintains the Democrats and others have exaggerated to undermine him.

While Matthews is optimistic about Trump’s support, overall approval remains relatively low as the second half of his term progresses. Matthews has been vocal in his support for Trump previously, even praising his strategies and charisma amid national debates over issues like university antisemitism and the Epstein case.
