Billy Joel Debunks DUI Rumors
Billy Joel Addresses Rumors and Personal Struggles in New Documentary
In his recent HBO documentary, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” the legendary musician clearly refuted false claims about multiple DUI arrests, emphasizing that such incidents never happened.
Joel expressed frustration with tabloid rumors, stating, “There’s this myth that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating it: ‘Oh, he’s got so many DUIs.’ I never had a DUI, so f–k you.” He also reflected on past car accidents in which he was involved, including a crash in June 2002 that required him to be airlifted to a hospital, with additional incidents in 2003 and 2004.
The singer explained that these accidents were caused by mental fog rather than alcohol, recalling, “I never had a DUI in my life. That’s another fallacy. My mind wasn’t right. I wasn’t focused.” He revealed that the aftermath of the September 11 attacks deeply affected him, leading to depression that contributed to his struggles behind the wheel.
Joel recounted a dark period, admitting, “9/11 just knocked the wind out of me, and I don’t know even now if I’ve recovered from it.” He also shared his feelings of grief following personal setbacks and relationship issues, which at one point led him to contemplate ending his life.
Additionally, Joel opened up about a tumultuous romance with Elizabeth Weber, which he described as a period of intense guilt. During this time, he experienced severe emotional pain, leading to thoughts of suicide. His sister, Judy Molinari, revealed she once gave him sleeping pills, which caused him to fall into a coma, alarming her that she might have inadvertently caused his death.
Despite these struggles, Joel eventually found a way to channel his emotions into his music, leading to reconciliations and a stable family life. He married Weber in 1973, divorced in 1982, and has since married Christie Brinkley, Katie Lee, and currently, Alexis Roderick.
