Tiger Woods Tells Son Charlie to Learn from Rory McIlroy to Build His Name
Tiger Woods’ Advice to His Son Charlie Reflects His Respect for Rory McIlroy
The legendary golfer shares unexpected guidance for his aspiring golfer son.

Charlie Woods, aiming to carve out his own golf career, has received unique advice from his father. Tiger Woods, considered one of the greatest golfers of all time with 15 major championships, recommended that Charlie model his swing after Rory McIlroy rather than his own.
Despite Woods’ legendary status, he suggested focusing on McIlroy’s technique. “I told Charlie, don’t copy my swing. Copy Rory’s,” Woods revealed. Having closely observed McIlroy’s growth as a professional, Woods holds him in high regard, both as a competitor and a friend.
Woods has shown a genuine interest in supporting his son’s progress, even caddying for Charlie in the past. Charlie shared, “It’s great. We stay in our own little world, taking it one shot at a time. He keeps me grounded and focused, sometimes reminding me to focus on the current shot.”

Charlie will have another opportunity to study McIlroy’s swing when the current Open Championship leader competes in this week’s tournament. The Open returns to Northern Ireland for the first time since 2019, a year when McIlroy missed the cut. This time, the golfer aims for better results.
Speaking about his return to Portrush, McIlroy stated, “In 2019, I tried to isolate myself, but it’s better to embrace the experience. Accepting the attention and engaging with the crowd creates a more positive atmosphere. I plan to embrace everything this week and avoid hiding from it, hoping for a better experience for everyone involved.”
