Texas Congressional Candidate Arrested at Redistricting Hearing

Congressional Candidate Removed and Arrested During Redistricting Hearing

Isaiah Martin, a Democratic candidate aiming to represent Texas’ 18th Congressional District, was forcibly removed from a hearing at the Texas State Capitol and subsequently arrested during a redistricting session. Martin, who is running to fill the seat left vacant by the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, refused to stop speaking after his allotted time, and security personnel eventually had to escort him out.

Security personnel struggled to remove Martin, who fell to the ground amid protests from the crowd. Witnesses described the scene, with one woman demanding, “Jesus! Get off of him!” and others noting that Martin was tripped. As he was pushed into the hallway, Martin shouted, “America will rise up against you!” before falling again or being taken down.

Martin’s brother stated that Isaiah exercised his First Amendment rights and voluntarily walked out with officers after his arrest. The brother argued that the charges against him—criminal trespass, disrupting a meeting, and resisting arrest—were unfounded. All charges were dropped the following day, with Martin expected to be released from jail.

Martin was arrested after he exceeded his speaking time and refused to cease his remarks, even after his microphone was cut off. The incident was ordered by Republican state Rep. Cody Vasut, who instructed security to remove Martin. The event was marked by tense moments, including Martin appearing to trip and fall during his removal, as captured in photos.

Martin, a former staffer for late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, has been vocal opposed to efforts by Texas Republicans to redraw congressional maps in their favor. Many believe the proposed redistricting could lead to five new congressional districts favoring Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
