MSNBC’s Chaos Month

Major Changes at MSNBC Amid CEO Exit and Network Restructuring

MSNBC is undergoing significant lineup modifications following a series of leadership shifts and layoffs. A notable departure is that of Steve Kornacki, the network’s prominent election analyst, who has decided to leave MSNBC for roles with NBC News and NBC Sports. At 45, Kornacki will continue providing analysis for major sporting events such as the Olympics, NFL, and Triple Crown, but will no longer be a full-time MSNBC contributor. Instead, he will serve as a contributor across NBC News.

In conjunction with Kornacki’s transition, Antonia Hylton, a current NBC correspondent, is stepping into a full-time role at MSNBC as a co-host of The Weekend: Primetime. An NBC representative highlighted this addition as a major development for the network.

The recent shake-up follows the abrupt firing of Joy Reid, a longstanding MSNBC host since 2014. Reid was reportedly let go by the newly appointed network president, Rebecca Kutler, and her departure was confirmed after a leaked audio revealed her dismissal. Reid expressed gratitude to her supporters and announced her final show, marking the end of an era for her show, The Reidout.

Meanwhile, network executives have pledged to create new opportunities for laid-off staff, with over 100 job openings announced as part of the restructuring. The changes come on the heels of a bold announcement in November 2024 to form SpinCo, a separate publicly traded company housing MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, and other properties. This move aims to position NBCUniversal for growth in a rapidly evolving media landscape, leveraging the combined strength of its content, technology, and talent.

Following the restructuring, Rashida Jones, the network’s president and the first Black woman to head a major U.S. TV news network, announced her departure in January, citing personal reflection and a desire to move on to new challenges.

These major realignments reflect MSNBC’s ongoing efforts to adapt in a competitive media environment, while also navigating significant leadership changes and strategic shifts.
