NJ Transit Bus Crash Injures Over Two Dozen in Second Incident This Month
Multiple Injuries in Bus Collision Near Port Authority
More than twenty people sustained minor injuries after a New Jersey Transit bus rear-ended another early Thursday morning near the Port Authority Bus Terminal. This marks the second such incident within three weeks.
The collision occurred around 8:50 a.m. on Ramp 96, which connects the Lincoln Tunnel to the terminal, according to authorities. Emergency services responded to the scene at West 41st Street and Dyer Avenue, finding 29 individuals with injuries including muscle, neck, and back pain. Most victims were hospitalized, though only two remained admitted for their injuries.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers on the ground and blood visible at the site. One passenger, Destiny Destra, reported her mother, Desiree Dyre, age 69, who was seated in the rear bus, suffered a concussion and arm injuries. Her mother recounted that the bus appeared to be speeding up the ramp, and despite a passenger urging the driver to slow down, the vehicle did not reduce speed before the crash.
Another woman on the front bus indicated she was hit from behind, suffering mostly neck pain, but otherwise was okay. Traffic was only mildly affected, with both buses expected to be operational again soon, according to officials.
Destra said her mother remains in significant pain, describing the aftermath as distressing, with many passengers on the ground and blood present. She also noted that a passenger had asked the driver to slow down, but the request was ignored.
This incident follows a series of transit disruptions, including a recent three-bus crash that temporarily shut down the terminal and delays caused by a stalled bus in the tunnel during recent weeks.
