Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Daughter Rescued from Strong Ocean Current
Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s 8-Year-Old Daughter Rescued from Riptide in Costa Rica
During a family vacation, Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s young daughter was caught in a dangerous riptide and was saved by surfers in Costa Rica. Witnesses hurried into the water with surfboards and boogie boards, managing to keep the girl safe and bring her to shore. One rescuer had to release the girl to push her onto the beach amid the powerful current, which ultimately dragged another rescuer away, highlighting the perilous conditions.
Warner, who was swimming with his daughter at the time, also was pulled from the water by bystanders but was pronounced dead shortly after on-site. The beach where this occurred, Playa Grande, is known for its challenging conditions, with warning signs in English and Spanish about the risks of drowning.
Authorities listed the cause of death as asphyxiation caused by submersion. Despite efforts—including 45 minutes of CPR—the actor could not be revived.
The Costa Rican Volunteer Lifeguard Association explained that recent incidents had led them to redirect resources to neighboring beaches like Chiquita, which are also known for strong currents. The rescue happened quickly; although beachgoers attempted to save Warner, they arrived too late.
His official cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to submersion. The tragic event underscores the danger of swimming in such conditions, even for experienced swimmers and celebrities alike.
