Infant Breaks Record as the Most Premature Baby to Survive

An Iowa baby, born at just 21 weeks of gestation, recently celebrated his first birthday, setting a world record as the most premature baby to survive.

Named Nash Keen, he weighed only 10 ounces at birth on July 5, 2024, nearly 133 days before his expected due date. His early arrival and survival earned him a spot in the Guinness World Records.

He spent six months in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Despite the challenges, Nash grew into a lively and resilient boy, hitting important developmental milestones.

Affectionately called “Nash Potato,” he continues to show strength, despite needing oxygen therapy and a feeding tube. His mother, Mollie, shared, “He’s a very determined, curious little boy, always with a smile.”

Nash was born when Mollie’s pregnancy was just 20 weeks along, and she went into labor shortly after discovering she was already 2 centimeters dilated during a checkup. He was born at 147 days gestation, surpassing the previous record by one day.

Medical staff played a crucial role in Nash’s survival, remaining calm and focused during his critical early days. Mollie praised their dedication, saying, “The doctors and nurses weren’t panicked, so we didn’t need to be either.”

Before birth, her obstetrician, Dr. Malinda Schaefer, explained the risks involved, emphasizing honest communication to help the family make informed decisions. Despite initial concerns, Nash continues to grow stronger and surpass developmental checkpoints.

Mollie added, “He’s learning to stand, and his legs are getting stronger every day.” The couple’s joy is heightened after experiencing a previous miscarriage, making Nash’s survival even more meaningful.
