Illegal Migrant Charged in CBP Officer Shooting: Dramatic Court Showdown

Illegal Immigrant Arrested in Connection to Off-Duty CBP Officer Shooting

An alleged illegal immigrant involved in the shooting of an off-duty Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer appeared in a Manhattan federal courtroom on Friday, facing charges as dozens of CBP officers looked on with frustration. The suspect, Christhian Aybar-Berroa, 22, was brought in dressed casually in ripped jeans and a designer T-shirt, and was ordered held without bail until a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 8.

Aybar-Berroa is accused of being the getaway driver during a robbery on July 19 in Fort Washington Park. During the attempt, his accomplice, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, 21, shot the officer during the robbery. The officer was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the face and arm but managed to defend himself by firing back, hitting Mora Nunez twice.

The suspect, Aybar-Berroa, pictured here, has been accused of being the getaway driver during the botched robbery that left the officer injured.

Aybar-Berroa was seen with a blank expression, his hair appeared unkempt, and he wore a costly T-shirt featuring a skeleton baseball player with the words “Godspeed.” Authorities say he fled the scene with Mora Nunez, who was later taken to a hospital by Aybar-Berroa after being shot, and then dropped off outside the emergency room.

Mora Nunez has not yet been formally arraigned. The injured officer continues to recover from his wounds.
