House Oversight Subpoenas Ghislaine Maxwell for August 11 Prison Interview
Ghislaine Maxwell to Be Deposed by House Republicans
House Republicans have subpoenaed Ghislaine Maxwell, a close associate of Jeffrey Epstein, for a deposition scheduled for August 11 at the Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee. Maxwell has been incarcerated since 2022 after a conviction related to a sex trafficking conspiracy that involved abusing minors as young as 14.
The subpoena was issued due to significant public interest and ongoing federal investigations into Epstein, who died in 2019. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer emphasized the importance of Maxwell’s testimony to help lawmakers understand how sex trafficking cases are handled and to consider potential legislative reforms. The committee also aims to examine the use of non-prosecution and plea agreements in sex crime investigations.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced plans to meet with Maxwell soon, stating that the Department of Justice is committed to hearing any information she might have about potential crimes. Blanche noted that this was a shift from prior policies, indicating that Maxwell’s cooperation could be considered to aid in ongoing investigations.
Maxwell’s lawyer, David Oscar Markus, stated that his client intends to cautiously approach the process and looks forward to discussing her case with authorities. Markus added that Maxwell would testify truthfully if given the chance and that this approach reflects the integrity of the legal process.
