GOP Senators Call for Special Counsel on Obama-Russia Probe

Senators Call for Independent Investigation Into Obama’s Role in Russiagate

Two senior Republican senators have urged the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to examine new disclosures related to the Obama administration’s potential involvement in the Russiagate investigation, which scrutinized links between Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

Senators Lindsey Graham and John Cornyn emphasized the need for an independent inquiry into whether former President Obama or his officials influenced national security operations for political purposes. Their request follows the DOJ’s recent formation of a “strike force” analyzing declassified intelligence documents released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Graham stated, “Appointing an independent special counsel would serve the country’s best interests,” accusing the Obama administration of creating and amplifying the false narrative of collusion to undermine Trump’s electoral victory. He called on Attorney General Bondi to investigate the extent to which Obama and his staff manipulated intelligence agencies for political ends.

Last week, Gabbard released previously classified materials suggesting that the Obama administration initially believed Russia’s hacking of U.S. voting systems was minimal before later revising their stance after Trump’s election win. She also disclosed a 2020 House Intelligence Committee report indicating Putin’s goal was to destabilize confidence in U.S. democracy and withholding damaging information for strategic use.

The revelations challenge the narrative that Putin aimed to favor Trump, with critics arguing that the evidence instead points to Russian interference aimed at sowing discord. An Obama spokesperson maintained that the released information does not conflict with conclusions that Russia sought to influence the election but did not manipulate votes.

Gabbard’s findings and public disclosures have prompted calls for a deeper investigation into whether the Obama administration played a “treasonous” role in orchestrating the Russia collusion allegations, with some senators advocating for a broader inquiry into the activities of the Obama-era intelligence community.
