Democratic Party’s Grocery Price Spotlight Backfires
Food Prices Soar Under Biden, DNC Post Sparks Controversy
A recent social media post by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), now deleted, drew criticism for its portrayal of grocery price trends. The post featured a graph suggesting that food costs increased significantly during President Joe Biden’s tenure, pointing to rising prices in items like cheese, alcohol, dairy, produce, and meats starting around 2021.
The graph highlighted a sharp uptick in prices during Biden’s presidency, contrasting with a more stable trend during Donald Trump’s administration. The White House quickly responded, emphasizing the red-colored rise in food prices on the chart as evidence of inflation under Biden, with arrows pointing to the period of his leadership.
Social media users quickly criticized the tweet. Some remarked that it seemed to undermine the Democratic Party’s messaging, with comments noting the post’s deletion after facing heavy backlash. Conservative commentators described the tweet as a major misstep, with one calling it “one of the dumbest posts” on the platform.
Illustrative images included a shocked man examining a long grocery receipt and detailed graphs showing food price increases from 2019 through 2024. Federal data indicates that food prices have risen over 22% since Biden took office. In comparison, food costs under Trump increased by only about 0.6% during his term.
Historically, Biden experienced inflation rates reaching 9.1% annually in June 2022—a level not seen since the early 1980s—remaining high for months after his inauguration. These trends reflect broader economic challenges during his presidency, with inflation impacting everyday costs for American families.
