NYC Expands Drone Use After 200th Subway Surfing Bust: The Future of Public Safety
New City Initiative to Expand Drone Use for Public Safety
Mayor Eric Adams announced the formation of a new “Drone Operations Committee” aimed at increasing the deployment of drones across the city to enhance public safety efforts. The committee, led by Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry, will oversee the expansion of drone activities and solidify New York City’s leadership in aerial technology.
Under this initiative, drones will assist with various tasks, including monitoring large public gatherings, tracking suspects, and responding to emergencies rapidly. The city’s drone programs have already proven effective, notably with the NYPD’s expanded drone unit, which has successfully arrested individuals engaging in subway surfing — a risky activity involving climbing on moving trains. Recently, four youths were apprehended after police used drone footage to track their actions on a subway crossing.
In addition to law enforcement, drones are being used to monitor city beaches for sharks, aid in searches for crime suspects, and observe major events. Mayor Adams emphasized that integrating drone technology is a key part of a broader public safety strategy that relies on rapid coordination and real-time intelligence, ensuring safety and efficiency in emergency responses.
“Drones are the future of public safety,” Adams stated. “This committee will elevate our use of this technology, providing vital eyes-on-the-ground for emergencies, natural disasters, or security threats.”
Deputy Mayor Daughtry added, “Drones act as a force multiplier, offering instant ground-level perspectives, helping coordinate evacuations, and safeguarding our first responders.”
