Jeffries ‘Freaking Out’ Over Zohran Mamdani’s NYC Takeover

Rep. Mike Lawler Warns Democrats Are Frustrated Over Socialist Candidate’s Rise in New York

Hudson Valley Congressman Mike Lawler believes top Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, are panicking over the recent primary victory of socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York’s mayoral race.

Lawler, a Republican, cited reporting that Jeffries privately fears Mamdani’s mayoral win could undermine Democrats’ chances of regaining control of the House. “They realize this is a catastrophe, not just for Democrats but nationally,” Lawler said, pointing out that prominent officials like Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Chuck Schumer are “freaking out” about the emergence of a Marxist leader in New York’s financial hub.

Lawler emphasized that Democrats see Mamdani’s platform as a disaster, citing his proposals to seize private property, ban private ownership, freeze rent, and establish government-controlled grocery stores, which could threaten suburban districts crucial for Congressional control.

Despite having met Mamdani and discussing the mayoral race, Jeffries has not endorsed him, and he plans another meeting after Mamdani’s return from his wedding celebration in Uganda.

Lawler, who announced he will seek re-election in 2026 rather than challenge Governor Hochul, commented on the Democrat’s dilemma: “They can’t openly support Mamdani, but they’re caught between acknowledging his rise and avoiding alienating voters.”

Implications for Midterm Elections

With Republicans holding a narrow House majority, and Democrats favored to gain seats in the upcoming midterms, Mamdani’s victory has added a layer of unpredictability. Lawler suggests that factors like Mamdani’s platform might influence the electoral landscape, potentially shifting historic voting patterns.
