Food Network Chef Anne Burrell Dies by Suicide

Anne Burrell, a well-loved chef and television personality, was found deceased at her Brooklyn home on June 17. The medical examiner confirmed that her death was caused by acute intoxication resulting from the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.

Authorities reported that the NYPD responded to a call around 7:50 a.m., discovering her unconscious. Despite efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. She was 55 years old.

Burrell’s family issued an emotional statement, describing her as a “beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend,” noting that “her smile lit up every room she entered” and that her warmth and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her.

In her final days, Burrell appeared healthy and cheerful, sharing a positive Instagram post just five days prior to her passing. In this photo, she encountered a well-known NYC icon, capturing the moment with a caption full of admiration. She also posted a selfie in her neighborhood, highlighting her friendly personality and vibrant presence.

Her last appearance on television was on Food Network’s “House of Knives,” after a long career including co-hosting “Worst Cooks in America,” where she was a regular from 2010 until 2024, and competing on “Iron Chef America.”

Her absence from the latest season of “Worst Cooks in America” puzzled fans, as she had been a central figure for many years. The network and Burrell did not disclose a reason for her departure.

Her family emphasized her positive influence and passion for food in their statement. A spokesperson for Food Network also paid tribute, describing her as “a remarkable person and culinary talent,” whose dedication and joy for cooking touched many.
