Idaho Firefighter Sniper Rejected by Fire Dept, Joined Army
Idaho Firefighters Ambushed and Killed by Suspected Sniper with Troubled Past
A young man accused of deliberately shooting and killing two Idaho firefighters before taking his own life last month had previously attempted to join firefighting and military services, but was rejected after failing to complete required training and assessments.
Wess Roley, 20, had a history of frustrations and early signs of aggression. He sought to join the fire service but was disqualified after expressing anger over the process. He also attempted to enlist in the Army twice but was disqualified both times for not following through with necessary steps, according to law enforcement officials.
Evidence suggests Roley planned the attack, leaving a goodbye message to his father alongside drawings depicting a mountain scene with firearms and a person seemingly aiming a rifle at his chin. Prior to the shootings, he started fires at Canfield Mountain to provoke a response from firefighters. During the incident, he fired at responding personnel from a tree, ultimately dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Roley left a chilling message predicting a violent confrontation: “Tomorrow, I shall go to battle. If I survive, it would be with utmost dishonor. I bid thee farewell,” he wrote, signing with symbols linked to Nazi ideology. His social media accounts and childhood acquaintances reveal a history of aggression, racist comments, and fascination with military imagery and bombs.
He lived with his mother, Heather Caldwell-Cuchiara, in Arizona before relocating to Idaho to live with his father, Jason Roley, a former Army staff sergeant who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Court records show his mother filed for protection, claiming Jason was an alcoholic and threatening her life, including threats of violence.
Authorities acknowledge Roley’s growing frustrations, with some speculation that his mental state may have deteriorated over time. Neighbors and classmates described him as aggressive, often making racist remarks and drawing disturbing images. Investigators are examining his social media for more insights into his motives.
Wess Roley’s family history includes a background of military service and domestic instability. His father denied involvement or danger, but a court previously ordered the father to stay away from the family, citing threats and domestic violence. Today, the community mourns the loss of heroic firefighters who responded to Roley’s deadly assault. His actions have shocked and saddened many, highlighting concerns over mental health and early warning signs.
